SUBJECT:

Environmental Qualification of Electrical Equipment (San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1).

This letter transmits an order which requires information to support the environmental qualification of safety related electrical equipment at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1.

The Commission's Memorandum and Order of May 23, 1980 addresses safety related electrical equipment exposed to a harsh environment, inside or outside containment, resulting from an accident.

The Order requires that all such equipment in operating reactors be fully qualified by June 30, 1982.

To complete this objective, you are required to submit, by November 1, 1980, all information to support a safety evaluation of the aforemen tioned equipment. If your facility had an established commitment date before November 1, 1980, it is fully expected that your submittal will be not later than that commitment date. If your facility's.commitment date is past without a complete submittal, it is strongly recommended that actions be expedited since they have already impacted the staff review schedule.

Briefings were held with all interested licensees during the week of July 17, 1980. Enforcement actions relative to this Order were dis cussed during these briefings.

Sincerely, Dennis M. Crutchfield, Chief (D 9 OpertingReactors Branch #5 t
