Enclosure PROGRESS ON SELECTED REGULATORY PROJECTS SAN ONOFRE UNIT 1 REVISION 3 Introduction The following is Revision 3 of the progress of selected regulatory projects at San Onofre Unit 1.
Long-Term Service Seismic Upgrading The Long-Term Service Seismic Upgrade Program continues on schedule. Most of the NRC concerns regarding criteria and methodology for the program have been resolved. A meeting was held on November 26, 1985 to finalize the NRC's review of the stress-strain criteria. Additional audits and meetings were conducted by the NRC staff and their consultants during the weeks of December 9 and 15, 1985. These sets of audits, with a few exceptions, complete the audit of generic issues. The NRC's case-by-case audits will be conducted at a later date. Modifications required to upgrade systems and equipment will be completed during the current outage.
Fire Protection The NRC is reviewing the submittal provided in response to the information requested in Generic Letter 81-12. This information demonstrates the method of compliance at San Onofre Unit 1 with the safe shutdown protection requirements in Section III.G of Appendix R to 10 CFR 50. Additional evaluations are being prepared for submittal to the NRC. These evaluations will demonstrate the separation required between systems in accordance with III.G.l. A site visit by the NRC staff and their consultants has been scheduled for January 14 and 15, 1986.
Environmental Qualification During the current outage SCE is completing the replacement/upgrade of equipment for the Environmental Qualification Program. This work continues on schedule.
Third Train of Auxiliary Feedwater There have been no changes in the status of implementation of the third train of auxiliary feedwater. Plans for the addition of a third auxiliary feedwater pump to be installed during the current outage are progressing. The components to be installed during the outage will be non-safety related and are being installed primarily as part of the dedicated shutdown system for fire protection. The third pump will be upgraded and integrated as a third train of the auxiliary feedwater system during the refueling/backfit outage for Cycle 10 operation.
-2 TDI Diesel Generators The TDI Diesel Generators are currently undergoing inspection. Diesel generator number 1 is currently out-of-service for the inspections with positive results to date. Following these inspections, the second diesel generator will also be taken out-of-service for further inspection.
Control Room Habitability Our determination of the extent of any modification to the Control Room HVAC System was expected to be submitted on November 15, 1985.
However, it has been determined that the modification proposal should include a formal request for a modification to the technical specifications related to the operation and surveillance of the control room HVAC system. It is anticipated that SCE review and approval of an amendment request can be completed by January 16, 1986.
Supplement 1 to NUREG-0737 The schedule for completion of the Control Room Design Review (CRDR),
Regulatory Guide 1.97 and Safety Parameter Display System (SPDS) Evaluation remains as delineated in the August 29, 1985 revision of the ILS.
Selection of the contractor for the CRDR is complete and the program plan for this effort was submitted by letter dated December 16, 1985.
The results of our study on the degree of compliance with Regulatory Guide 1.97 was also submitted on December 16, 1985. The next scheduled NUREG-0737, Supplement 1 submittal is the SPDS criteria on January 9, 1987.
