Enclosure PROGRESS ON SELECTED REGULATORY PROJECTS SAN ONOFRE UNIT 1 REVISION 1 Introduction The following is Revision 1 of the progress of selected regulatory projects at San Onofre Unit 1.

Long-Term Seismic Upgrading The Long-Term Seismic Upgrade Program continues on schedule. Most of the NRC concerns regarding criteria and methodology for the program have been resolved. The NRC is planning to retain a second consultant to review the use of a stress-strain correlation criterion prior to granting final approval.

Several audits have been conducted on the results of the seismic analysis.

The most recent audits were the week of October 7. The conclusions have generally been favorable. Modifications to complete the seismic upgrade of SONGS 1 to 0.67g are scheduled for the November 30, 1985 outage.

Fire Protection A submittal dated October 4, 1985 was provided to the NRC regarding Appendix R,Section III.G compliance plans for San Onofre Unit 1. This submittal provides the response required by NRC Generic Letter 81-12. The submittal discusses SCE's plans for modifications to be installed during the November 30, 1985 outage and also identifies areas where additional details are required.

Environmental Qualification The NRC audit was conducted during the week of September 23, 1985.

The audit resulted in only minor areas for improvement in the E.Q. program and identified only a few problem areas for additional work on particular equipment items.

Preparation for the upcoming outage is ongoing.

San Onofre Unit 1 will be shut down prior to end-of-core life on November 30, 1985 for the purpose of replacing components as part of this program.

Third Train of Auxiliary Feedwater Plans for the addition of a third auxiliary feedwater pump to be installed during the upcoming outage are progressing. As stated in our last progress report, the components to be installed during the upcoming outage will be non-safety related.

The third pump will be upgraded and the system automated during the refueling/backfit outage for Cycle 10 operation.

-2 TDI Diesel Generators As stated in our last update, SCE is continuing with plans for extensive diesel inspection and testing during the upcoming refueling outage. Technical Specifications have been proposed to reduce the number of fast starts and additional changes will be proposed in the near future to reduce the required frequency of slow starts required to demonstrate operability after one or more sources of A.C. power have been lost.

By its September 23, 1985 letter, the NRC staff expressed agreement with SCE that additional inspections or testing prior to the upcoming outage need not be performed.

Control Room Habitability Responses to NRC questions on Control Room Habitability were submitted on September 19, 1985. SCE is now completing our review of the need for and extent of any modifications to the Control Room HVAC and will provide a submittal on our determination by November 15, 1985.

Supplement 1 to NUREG-0737 Since our last report on this topic, SCE has selected the contractor that will be assisting with the Control Room Design Review (CRDR).

The program plan for this work will be submitted by December 16, 1985.

The plans for completion of the CRDR, Regulatory Guide 1.97 and Safety Parameter Display System Evaluation were delineated in our August 29, 1985 revision of the ILS.

SCE's study on the degree of compliance with Regulatory Guide 1.97 is continuing and will be submitted by December 16, 1985. The completion of the evaluation of Safety Parameter Display System is dependent upon completion of the other two projects and is scheduled to be completed by January 1, 1987.
