Raskin, Vice President Nuclear Engineering Safety and Licensing Department Southern California Edision Company 2244 Walnut Grove Avenue Post Office Rox 800 Rosemead, California 91770
Dear Mr. Baskin:
SURJECT:
INTAKE STRUCTURE CORROSION AND REPAIR Re:
San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit No. 1 The NRC staff has reviewed your October 18, 1984 submittal which forwarded the Bechtel Power Corporation report "Structural Evaluation and Repair of SONGS-1 Intake Structure" dated October 2, 1984.
The staff's safety evaluation is enc osed.
As discussed in the enclosed safety evaluation, there are two issues that have not been resolved.
- 1. A surveillance program should be provided that includes provisions for inspecting the pump well and the screen well during each refueling outage.
We note that you have committed to provide a surveillance program 90 days prior to the next refueling outage.
- 2. The results of an analysis of the intake structure under the assumption of dewatering and only one pump well being full has not been provided for NRC staff review.
These issues will be included in the Systematic Evaluation Program's Inteorated Assessment for San Onofre Unit No. 1.

Mr. Kenneth P. Baskin 2 -
April 24, 1985 Subject to the resolution of issues relative to the investigation of the effects of dewatering and only one pump well being full and the surveillance program, the staff finds that your evaluation and repair of the intake structure is adequate and the structure can withstand both normal operating loadings and postulated earthquake loads based on 0.67g maximum ground acceleration.
Sincerely, Will OWN W John A. Zwolinski, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 5 Division of Licensing
