Nuclear Regulatory Conmission Office of Inspection and Enforcement Region V Suite 202, Walnut Creek Plaza 1990 North California Boulevard Walnut Creek, California 94596 Attention:
Mr. R. H. Engelken, Director Docket No. 50-206 San Onofre Unit 1
Dear Sir:
IE Inspection Report No. 50-206/79-12 The subject IE Inspection Report was forwarded by letter dated September 21, 1979 from Mr. J. L. Crews of your office.
Appendix A to that letter was a Notice of Violation concerning failure to calibrate certain pressure gages and amissions in Station Order S-A-ll2, Listing of Equirpment Subject to the Quality Assurance Program.
This letter provides our response to that Notice of Violation pursuant to 10 CER 2.201.
- 1.
Cause of the Violations A)
Station Order S-E-115, Requirements for the Calibration and Control of Measuring and Test Instrumentation, had been re vised in April of 1978 increasing the frequency of calibra tion for the Roylyn pressure gages from 2 years to 6 months.
However, measures to insure that the Roylyn pressure gages were actually calibrated at the increased frequency were not taken.
B)
The items missing fran Station Order S-A-112 were apparently removed by a clerical error in a previous revision of the Station Order.

- 2. Steps Taken to Correct the Violations A) The 4 Roylyn pressure gages were calibrated in accordance with S-E-115 and were found to be in calibration. Consequently, the calibration of instruments calibrated to the Roylyn gages is satisfactory and not in question.
B) A tenporary operating remorandum has been issued to include the missina items in S-A-112.
- 3. Steps Taken to Prevent Recurrence A) The dated file card system which insures that gages and instru ments are calibrated as required has been corrected to insure that the Roylyn pressure gages are calibrated every 6 months.
B)
Station Order S-A-112 will be corrected to include the missing items.
Revision of the order will be accorrplished by November 24, 1979.
The above corrective actions should eliminate the areas of concern noted in the subject report.
Should you have any questions concerning this response, please contact me.
Sincerely,
