Subject:

Systematic Evaluation Program San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 By letter dated April 7, 1981, we indicated our intention to review NRC prepared SEP topic safety evaluations and provide comments within 30 days of receipt. It has become apparent that complying with the 30 day review time will not be possible for all topics. This is due to the variable availability of manpower and the assignment of resources to other activities, including seismic reevaluation, SCE prepared SEP topic assessments, support to station operations during recent plant outages, and environmental qualification.

Although it is still our intention to review these evaluations as soon as possible following receipt, a 30 day turnaround time cannot be assured.

SCE currently has several NRC prepared SEP topic safety evaluations in-house for review. These topics are listed in Enclosure 1 along with the current schedule for providing comments. These schedules reflect consideration of other activities and therefore, it is anticipated that the listed dates are realistic. However, every effort will be made to expedite these reviews.

In the future, as SCE receives NRC-prepared safety evaluations, a quick assessment of the report and other ongoing activities will be made. If we will be unable to complete our review within 30 days, we will call the NRC project manager for SONGS 1 and inform him of the schedule for completion.

If you have any questions on this matter, please let me know.

Very truly yours,
