Exemption Requests to Appendix J to 10 CR Part 50 San Onofre Unit No. 1 Your letter dated April 21, 1976 requested certain exemptions,to Appendix J to 10 CFR Part 50 for San Onofre Unit No. 1. The NRC staff has completed the review of your submittal and based on this review has made the following determinations.
- 1. Your request for exemption from the requirement of Section II.A.6.(b) of Appendix J is not acceptable. This provision requires that Type A tests be performed at each plant shutdown for refueling pr approximately 18 months, whichever occurs first, in the event that two consecutive periodic Type A tests fail to meet the applicable acceptance criteria.
For the reasons stated in the enclosed safety evaluation report, your request is denied.
- 2. Your request to test the containment airlocks after each opening or within 72 hours8.333333e-4 days <br />0.02 hours <br />1.190476e-4 weeks <br />2.7396e-5 months <br /> following the first of a series of openings dbring reactor operation is in-conformance with the current provisions of' Appendix J to 10 CFR Part 50; therefore, no exemption is required.
- 3. Your request to exclude airlock testing requirements during training startups and low power physics tests is not acceptable. For the reasons stated in the enclosed safety evaluation report, your request is denied.
