CALIFORNIA 91770 K. P. BASKIN TELEPHONE MANAGER OF NUCLEAR ENGINEERING, (213) 572-1401 SAFETV, AND LICENSING July 19, 1982 Director, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attention:

D. M. Crutchfield, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 5 Division of Licensing U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 Masonry Wall Evaluations SEP Topic 111-6 Seismic Design Considerations San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 By letters dated February 17, 1982 and April 2, 1982, the NRC indicated that the methodology used to evaluate masonry walls at San Onofre Unit 1 could not be accepted without additional confirmatory testing. A proposed testing program was discussed with the NRC staff in a meeting on May 13, 1982. Provided as an enclosure to this letter is a detailed description of our masonry wall test program.

As indicated in our letter to the NRC dated June 24, 1982, SCE has been reevaluating alternatives to the performance of a test program. Based on our review of this matter to-date, we have decided to proceed with the test program as outlined in the enclosure. However, a final determination with respect to modifying or testing all of the masonry walls has not yet been made. In the event that it is decided to modify certain walls, the corresponding walls in the test program will be deleted from the enclosed program.

In accordance with our June 24, 1982 letter, it is requested that NRC approval of the enclosed test program be provided by July 30, 1982. This approval is required to ensure completion of the program in accordance with the enclosed schedule.

If you have any questions or require additional information, please let us know.
