Gentlemen:
This refers to the management meeting held among Southern California Edison
Company, Region V, and NRR representatives at the San Onofre Nuclear
Generating Station on September 25, 1990. During this meeting we discussed
activities of recent interest at San Onofre. You also provided an update on
your root cause analysis program and the design basis documentation (DBD)
review being performed by your staff. A copy of the agenda for this meeting
is enclosed.
During this meeting we discussed your recent experiences with erosion and
corrosion of feedwater piping, and you stated that you intended to provide an
informational licensee event report (LER) discussing the issue. We stressed
the importance of properly assessing this issue and the resulting wall
thinning, since it offers the potential for significant consequences.
This meeting was related to activities authorized by NRC License Nos. DPR-13,
NPF-10 and NPF-15. Subjects discussed during the meeting are described in
the enclosed Meeting Report.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790(a), a copy of this letter and the enclosed
report will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
