Southern California Edison Company SAN ONOFRE NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION P.O. BOX 128 SAN CLEMENTE, CALIFORNIA 92672 J. G. HAYNES TELEPHONE STATION MANAGER (714) 492-7700 March 29, 1984 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Inspection and Enforcement Region V 1450 Maria Lane, Suite 210 Walnut Creek, California 94596-5368 Attention:

Mr. F. A. Wenslawski, Chief Radiological Safety Branch

Dear Sir:

Subject:

Notification of Completion and Final Results of Survey Efforts to Locate Contaminated Material at the Mesa

References:

1) Letter, F. A. Wenslawski (NRC) to C. B. McCarthy (SCE),

dated February 7, 1984, Acknowledgment of Report Received

2) Letter, H. B. Ray (SCE) to.J. B. Martin (NRC), dated January 16, 1984, Response to request for follow-up information Reference 1 acknowledged receipt of our letter (reference 2) which transmitted information regarding our follow-up efforts to locate contaminated material at the Mesa. The letter also requested that SCE forward the final results of survey efforts when they were completed.

The radiological survey of the Mesa was completed on February 8, 1984.

Forty-three (43) additional items with measurable radioactive contamination were identified and transferred to the Unit 1 restricted area after December 31, 1983.

The enclosure is an updated Appendix 1 to reference 2.

We have determined the radiological impact, presented by each of the forty-three items, in the same manner as presented in Appendices 3-6 of the enclosure to reference *2. None of the recently recovered items posed a radiological impact greater than the impact posed by the items in the enclosure to reference 2.

As concluded in reference 2, the maximum potential exposure from the released material was substantially less than any regulatory limits. There was no effect on the health and safety of plant personnel or the public.
