BOMB THREAT At 4:15 pm, PST, Tuesday, March 3, 1981, the Bechtel Corporation shdar (construction contractor for Units 2 and 3) received a bomb threat from an unknown male caller. The caller stated that tweleve bombs were placed in the construction areas of Units 2 and 3, and in the periphery of the construction area. These bombs were set to go off in four hours.
A search of the site was conducted with negative results.
Licensee management and Bechtel personnel involved believed this threat to be a hoax. The Provost Marshal at Camp Pendleton and the State of California have been notified. No media interest is expected and no press release is planned by the licensee or Region V. The IAT has been notified.
Construction of Units 2 and 3 is approximately 95% and 75% complete respectively.
No fuel is on site for Units 2 and 3. San Onofre Unit 1, adjacent to, but separated from Units 2 and 3, is shut down for maintenance on the steam generators.
This Preliminary Notification is issued for information only and no further action by IE is anticipated.
Region V Duty Officer received notification of this matter by telephone from the Headquarters Duty Officer at 5:45 pm, PST, Tuesday, March 3, 1981.
