On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I am responding to your email addressed to Chairman Allison Macfarlane, dated May 21,2013, concerning the Palisades Nuclear Plant. Your email addresses an event where the safety injection refueling water tank (SIRWT) leaked approximately 80 gallons of low radioactivity water into Lake Michigan and caused the plant to shutdown . The events addressed in your email are well known to the NRC and we have provided independent safety oversight of the Palisades Nuclear Plant. Your concern regarding these events is noted . Be assured that for each event, any violations of NRC regulations were handled in accordance with our procedures and that the plant was not permitted to restart until it was in full compliance with agency regulations.

The radioactivity released to Lake Michigan was well below regulatory limits and did not impact the safety of plant workers or the public. The NRC closely monitored the licensee's SIRWT repair activities, which have been completed. The NRC ensured the plant was safe to operate when it restarted on June 17, 2013.
