REV. 0 PAGE 4 0F 133 Catawba Nuclear Station JPM A Sep. 2012 NRC Exam PAGE 4 OF 133 READ TO APPLICANT DIRECTION TO APPLICANT:

I will explain the initial conditions, and state the task to be performed. All control room steps shall be performed for this JPM, including any required communications. I will provide initiating cues and reports on other actions when directed by you. Ensure you indicate to me when you understand your assigned task. To indicate that you have completed your assigned task return the handout sheet I provided you.

INITIAL CONDITIONS:

1. Unit 1 is operating at 100% power.

INITIATING CUES:

1. The CRS has directed you to perform PT/1/A/4150/001 C (NC Pump Seal Injection Flow Verification) beginning at step 12.4. During the PreJob Brief, Step 12.7 and 12.11 were N/Ad. Peer Check has been waived.

EXAMINER NOTE: After reading Initiating Cue, provide the applicant with a copy of PT/1/A/4150/001 C.

STEP 1

12.4 WHILE increasing charging flow in the next step, ensure 1NV-309 (Seal Water Injection Flow) is opening to compensate for the increase in seal injection flow.

STANDARD This is a continuous action step. The applicant will monitor 1NV-309 Seal Water Injection Flow) and ensures it is responding as required.

COMMENTS:

___ SAT

___ UNSAT NOTE: Annunciator 1AD-6, C/9 "PZR HI LEVEL DEVIATION CONTROL" may be received while performing the following steps. This will energize backup PZR heaters causing PZR pressure to increase. Depending on the magnitude of the pressure change and the magnitude of the moderator pressure coefficient, reactor thermal power may be affected. (R.M.)

STEP 2 12.5 Slowly open 1NV-294 (NV Pmps A & B Disch Flow Ctrl) to the full open position.

STANDARD Applicant will manually open 1NV-294 (NV Pmps A & B Disch Flow Ctrl) to the full open position This step is critical to ensure that maximum possible seal injection flow is obtained.

Catawba Nuclear Station JPM A Sep. 2012 NRC Exam STEP/STANDARD SAT/UNSAT PAGE 6 0F 133 STEP 3 12.6 Record the individual NC pump seal injection flow on 3.1 (Calculation Sheet).

STANDARD Applicant will record the individual NC pump seal injection flow on 3.1 (Calculation Sheet).

COMMENTS:

___ SAT

___ UNSAT NOTE: Energizing backup PZR heaters will cause PZR pressure to increase. Depending on the magnitude of the pressure change and the magnitude of the moderator pressure coefficient, reactor thermal power may be affected. (R.M.)

STEP 4 12.7 IF desired, energize extra PZR heater capacity to reduce pressure transient on the PZR while lowering level in the following step.

STANDARD This step was N/Ad during the PreJob Brief COMMENTS:

Catawba Nuclear Station JPM A Sep. 2012 NRC Exam STEP/STANDARD SAT/UNSAT PAGE 7 0F 133 STEP 5 12.8 WHILE reducing charging flow in the next step, ensure 1NV-309 (Seal Water Injection Flow) is closing to compensate for the decrease in seal injection flow.

STANDARD This is a continuous action step. The applicant will monitor 1NV-309 Seal Water Injection Flow) and ensures it is responding as required.

COMMENTS:

___ SAT

___ UNSAT STEP 6 12.9 Reduce charging flow as necessary to restore PZR level to program level.

STANDARD Applicant will slowly throttle closed on 1NV-294 (NV Pmps A & B Disch Flow Ctrl) as necessary to restore PZR level to program level.

Examiner Note: 1AD-7 C/4 (NCP SEAL WATER LO FLOW) may alarm during this step depending on how fast the applicant decreases flow.

If so, the applicant should refer to the annunciator response procedure, however, seal flows may recover before the applicant can identify the affected pump(s). If the applicant dispatches an operator to 1RFM-14, say Operator has been Dispatched.

This step is critical to return pressurizer level to program so that the Pressurizer Level Contoller can be placed to automatic.

12.10 WHEN PZR level is at program level, perform the 12.10.1 Adjust 1NV-294 (NV Pmps A & B Disch Flow Ctrl) as necessary to maintain stable PZR level.

STANDARD Applicant will throttle 1NV-294 (NV Pmps A & B Disch Flow Ctrl) as necessary to stabilize Pzr level at program level.

This step is critical to prevent a pressurizer level transient when the Pressurizer Level Master is placed in automatic.

COMMENTS:

CRITICAL STEP

___ SAT

___ UNSAT STEP 8 12.10.2 Verify output on the PZR Level Master is approximately the value recorded in Step 12.1.
