August 30, 2012 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PNO-IV-2012-A This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region IV, Arlington, Texas, staff on this date.

UPDATE: REGION IV RESPONSE TO HURRICANE/SEVERE WEATHER ON GULF COAST
DESCRIPTION:
At 11:34 a.m. CDT on August 30, 2012, Region IV deactivated its Incident Response Center and the NRC returned to a normal response mode. The Incident Response Center had been activated at 6:08 p.m. CDT on August 28, 2012, in response to Hurricane Isaac.
Hurricane Isaac made landfall near New Orleans, LA, Tuesday evening, August 28. Three sites, Waterford 3, River Bend Station, and Grand Gulf were potentially in the path of the storm. The approximate maximum windspeed experienced at Waterford 3 was 65 mph and 30 mph at River Bend Station and Grand Gulf. Both the licensee and NRC completed damage assessments and reported no
damage.
Waterford 3 had been shutdown on August 28 in advance of the storm and will remain shutdown until the NRC, in consultation with FEMA, completes an assessment of plant and offsite emergency preparedness programs and infrastructure. Both River Bend and Grand Gulf operated at full power during the storm. The electric grid remained stable and offsite power was not affected during the storm. No emergency declaration criterion was met at any time.
The States of Louisiana and Mississippi and FEMA Regions IV and VI have been informed.
