ME7250 - FW: Call From Kewaunee re: NFPA 805 Suspension To NRR staff assigned to review of Kewaunees adoption of NFPA-805:
Kewaunee via its Chief Nuclear Officer has requested of the NRC Chairman that the NRC suspend its review of Kewaunee Power Stations application to adopt NFPA-805. The application was dated September 21, 2011 (ADAMS Accession No. ML11277A240).
Please review the two messages below for details known at this time.
By Cc, I introduce Shawn Williams as Action Branch Chief for NRR/DORL/LPL3-1, succeeding Robert Pascarelli, currently assigned to other duties. Shawns assignment began on 12/4/2011. Shawn may be reached at 301-415-1009.

RE: Call From Kewaunee re: NFPA 805 Suspension Your information aligns exactly with information provided to me by Craig Sly, Dominion Energy Kewaunee corporate licensing based in Richmond, VA. The call from Sly concluded at 5:40 PM ET.
Further, Sly indicated that this decision has been percolating at Dominion prior to the most recent contact with NRC staff assigned to Kewaunees NFPA-805 adoption. Thus, todays conference call concerning NFPA-805 adoption at Kewaunee was only contemporaneous with the communication of this decision by Mr. Heacock to the NRC Chairman.
As a consequence the NRC preparation of requests for information have also ceased.
Dominion plans to request discussions with NRC staff in the near future to determine and implement a success path from the present suspension of the ME7250 review to a stable licensing status.
This pair of messages will be circulated to cognizant NRC staff for further dissemination to other concerned parties.
Please convert activites from a focus on review to a focus on suspension of the request pending further guidance.

Call From Kewaunee re: NFPA 805 Suspension
- Bob, Ken OBrien asked me to email you this information. Today the licensing manager, Tom Breene, informed me that Dave Heacock, Dominion CNO, talked to Chairman Jaczko and informed him that Kewaunee will be suspending their NFPA 805 license amendment request until the sale of the nuclear plant is complete.
Mr. Heacock stated that Dominion made the decision, in part, because the sale of the plant would be complete prior to the NFPA 805 amendmen is finalized, and that Dominion wants to let the new potential owners decide on implementation of NFPA 805.
The discussion with Chairman Jaczko today, is the first time the NRC staff has heard of this proposed suspension.
- Thanks, rob 2
