UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 August 12, 2011 Mr. Peter T. Dietrich Senior Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer Southern California Edison Company San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station P.O. Box 128 San Clemente, CA 92674-0128

SUBJECT:

SAN ONOFRE NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNITS 2 AND 3 WITHDRAWAL OF 10 CFR PART 20 EXEMPTION REQUEST

Dear Mr. Dietrich:

By letter dated May 20, 2011 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML111430627), Southern California Edison (SCE) requested an exemption from the reporting requirements of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 20, Appendix G,Section III.E, for the shipment of four steam generator lower assemblies from the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Units 2 and 3. The regulation requires the shipper of low-level radioactive waste (in this case, SCE) to investigate, trace the shipment, and file a report with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in the event the recipient of the shipment has not acknowledged receipt within 20 days after transfer. SCE indicated that due to the large size of the steam generator sections and the speed limitations on the special transport trailer, the expected time in transit to the disposal site for each shipment would be approximately 37 days.

By letter dated August 4,2011 (ADAMS Accession No. ML112160514), SCE withdrew the exemption request. The NRC staff acknowledges your request to withdraw the application. The NRC staff has terminated its review of the exemption request and did not prepare an Environmental Assessment for this action.

Sincerely,
