UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 March 25, 2011 Mr. Stanley W. Gorski Field Offices Supervisor Habitat Conservation Division National Marine Fisheries Service James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory 74 Magruder Road Highlands, NJ 07732

SUBJECT:

ESSENTIAL FISH HABITAT ASSESSMENT FOR LICENSE RENEWAL OF THE HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION AND SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2

Dear Mr. Gorski:

In a letter dated December 23, 2009! the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requested that the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) provide a list of essential fish habitat (EFH) that have been designated in the vicinity of Hope Creek Generating Station and Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Units 1 and 2, sites and their associated transmission line corridors. The NMFS replied to this request on February 23, 2010, and indicated that the estuarine portions of the Delaware River and its tributaries, including the estuarine areas crossed by the transmission lines, have been designated as essential fish habitat for a wide variety of species.

In a letter dated February 11, 2011, the NRC submitted its EFH Assessment to you as part of our consultation under the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, as amended. During a teleconference on March 17, 2011, your staff provided us feedback regarding potential indirect impacts to species. Based on your specific feedback and the level of public interest regarding the Delaware River, we are resubmitting the enclosed EFH Assessment which contains changes to reflect your comments.

S. Gorski

-2 Per the NRC staff's EFH Assessment determinations, we are requesting abbreviated consultation and that you review the enclosed EFH Assessment and provide your EFH Conservation Recommendations to us within 30 days. If you have any questions regarding this EFH or the staff's request, please contact Ms. Leslie Perkins, Environmental Project Manager, at 301-415-2375, or bye-mail at leslfe.perkins@nrc.gov.

Sincerely, Bo Pham, Chief Projects Branch 1 Division of License Renewal Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Docket Nos. 50-272, 50-311 and 50-354
