BEAVER VALLEY POWER STATION, UNIT NO.2 - REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING THE SERVICE WATER PUMP TESTING RELIEF REQUESTS PRR4 AND PRR10 (TAC NOS. ME4385 and ME4393)
Dear Mr. Harden:
By letter dated July 22, 2010, FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company submitted relief requests PRR4 and PRR10 for the approval of proposed alternatives to certain requirements associated with service water pump testing during the remainder of the Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit NO.2 third 10-year inservice testing program, which began on November 18,2007.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff is reviewing the submittal and has determined that additional information is needed to complete its review. The specific questions are found in the enclosed request for additional information (RAI). The NRC staff is requesting a response to the RAI by January 7, 2011.

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION RELIEF REQUEST REGARDING PROPOSED ALTERNATIVE REPAIR METHODS FOR SERVICE WATER PUMP TESTING ASSOCIATED WITH THE INSERVICE TESTING PROGRAM FIRSTENERGY NUCLEAR OPERATING COMPANY BEAVER VALLEY POWER STATION, UNIT NO.2 DOCKET NO. 50-412 By letter dated July 22,2010, (Agencywide Document Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML102090021), FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (the licensee) submitted relief requests PRR4 and PRR10 for the approval of proposed alternatives to certain requirements associated with service water pump testing during the remainder of the Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit NO.2 third 1O-year inservice testing program, which began on November 18, 2007. In order to complete the review of the document listed above, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff needs the following additional information:
Relief Request PRR4:
- 1. Explain why a pump curve is being developed in accordance with NUREG-1482 guidelines instead of American Society of Mechanical Engineers Operations and Maintenance (ASME)
Code Case OMN-9 or OMN-16.
- 2. This relief request is noted as Revision 1. Is Revision 0 of the relief request described in Section 8, "Precedent?" If not, provide a copy of Revision 0 of the relief request.
Relief Request PRR10:
- 3. Provide ASTM numbers and thermal expansion coefficients for the stainless steel pump shaft and the carbon steel pump columns.
- 4. Explain why ASME Section XI is being referenced, and provide which Edition/Addenda is being referenced.
- 5. Explain why a Code Case OMN-9 pump curve cannot be developed in the summer to accommodate river water temperatures above 60°F, in addition to the winter pump curve proposed to be developed in PRR4, Revision 1.
