SUMMARY
OF THE JUNE 2, 2010, PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS THE 2009 BYRON NUCLEAR POWER STATION UNIT 1 AND 2 END-OF-CYCLE PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT On June 2, 2010, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) held a public meeting at the Byron Station Training Building, Room 107 in Byron, Illinois. The meeting was between NRC Region III and Exelon Generation Company representatives to discuss the NRCs 2009 End-of-Cycle Assessment of Byron Station, Units 1 and 2, safety performance. The results of that assessment were discussed in a letter to the licensee dated March 3, 2010, which can be found in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) at ML100610236.
The NRC began the meeting with an overview of the NRC and the nuclear industry, the NRCs Reactor Oversight Process (ROP) and national ROP results. This was followed by a summary of the NRCs 2009 assessment of safety performance for Byron Station, Units 1 and 2. The NRCs meeting presentation slides can be found in ADAMS at ML101590172 and the licensees presentation slides can be found at ML101590197. A list of principal meeting attendees can be found in the attached Enclosure.
Mr. B. Adams, Byron Plant Manager, provided an oral response to the NRCs assessment.
Mr. Adams concurred with the NRCs assessment that Byron Station, Units 1 and 2 were operated in a manner that preserved the health and safety of the public and the environment.
In addition, Mr. Adams discussed the licensee's view on human performance improvements.
Mr. Adams also described some of the actions the licensee is taking to address these issues.
At the end of the meeting, both the NRC staff and the licensee answered a number of questions from member of the public.
