By letter dated September 29, 2009, Arizona Public Service Company (APS) submitted a request for relief from the requirements of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI, for the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station (PVNGS), Units 2 and 3. The relief request, RR No. 44, requests deferral of certain visual examinations required by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (ASME Code),Section XI, Table IWB-2500-1, Examination Categories B-N-2 and B-N-3, until 2027 for Unit 2, and until 2028 for Unit 3.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has reviewed RR No. 44 and has determined that the information specified in the attached draft Request for Additional Information (RAI) is needed for the staff to complete its evaluation. In order for the staff to complete its review in a timely manner, we request that you submit your response to the enclosed RAI by April 30, 2010. Please contact me if APS would like to have a conference call to discuss the draft RAI.
