================= begin Formal RAI==============
REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON RELIEF REQUEST FOR 1ST PERIOD LIMITEDWELD EXAMINATIONS AT DUANE ARNOLD ENERGY CENTER (TAC NO. ME1821)
In a letter dated July 30,2009, NextEra Energy Duane Arnold, LLC submitted a relief request for an alternative to the required 1st period limited weld examinations for the a" ten-year interval of various welds at the Duane Arnold Energy Center (DAEC). The Vessels and Internals Integrity Branch (CVIB) is in the process of reviewing the request and based on the review conducted thus far, the staff has developed a request for additional information (RAI) as addressed below.
Table A from the Enclosure to the licensee's July 30, 2009 submittal lists a Category R-Aexam for a R1.16 Item Number, and two welds, RMA-J004 and CUA-J024, with 50% coverage. Please identify clearly on the Isometric Drawings No. 1.2 20 and 1.2-22 which is the RMA-J004 weld that was inspected on Feb. 8, 2009 as well as the other seven manifold to riser welds that are considered comparable to RMA-J004. Have any of the eight manifold to riser welds been previously inspected as part of the lSI program?
The staff notes that many of the welds shown in the Isometric Drawings No. 1.2-20 and 1.2-22 have had weld overlays applied to repair cracking and/or leaks, Discuss the issues that will dictate which welds will be included in the 4 t h 1
interval Risk-Informed inspection plan. A list of the inspection history for other category R-A, Item R1.16 welds in the Reactor Coolant Recirculation (RCR) System would be helpful.
=============== end Formal RAI================
It was affirmed that DAEC plans to respond to these items by letter on or before February 25, 2010.
