By letter dated June 4, 2009, Arizona Public Service Company (APS) requested approval of Relief Request 36, Revision 1, for the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station (PVNGS), Units 1, 2 and 3. The requested relief would allow the application of full structural weld overlays on 11 reactor coolant system cold leg dissimilar metal welds in each Unit. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has reviewed your request and has determined that the information specified in the attached draft Request for Additional Information (RAI) is needed for the staff to complete its evaluation.
In order for the staff to complete its review in time to meet your requested approval date of October 3, 2009, we request that you submit your response to the enclosed RAI by July 31, 2009. Please contact me promptly if APS would like to have a conference call to discuss the draft RAI.
