NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Site: http://www.nrc.gov No.08-219 December 3, 2008 NRC ACCEPTS APPLICATION FOR NEW REACTORS AT COMANCHE PEAK SITE The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has docketed, or accepted for review, a combined license (COL) application for two new reactors at the Comanche Peak site in Texas. Luminant Generations application, submitted Sept. 19, is the 13th COL request the agency has accepted for review.

Luminant Generation seeks approval to build and operate two U.S. Advanced Pressurized Water Reactors (US-APWR) at the site, about four miles north of Glen Rose, Texas. The application, minus proprietary or security-related details, is available on the NRC Web site at:

http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-reactors/col/comanche-peak.html.

The NRC currently is reviewing the US-APWR design for possible certification. The staff will consider any findings concerning the design during the review of the Comanche Peak application. Information on the US-APWR application is available on the NRC Web site at:

http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-reactors/design-cert/apwr.html.

Docketing the Comanche Peak application does not indicate whether the Commission will approve or reject the request. The docket numbers established for this application are 52-034 and 52-035. The NRC will shortly issue in the Federal Register a notice of opportunity to participate, or intervene, in a hearing on the application. Petitions to intervene in a hearing may be filed within 60 days of the notice, by anyone whose interest may be affected by the proposed license and who wishes to participate as a party in the proceeding. More information on the hearing process is available on the NRC Web site at: http://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/regulatory/adjudicatory/hearing.html.

Information about the new reactor licensing process is available on the NRC Web site at:
