NRC Generic Letter 2008-01, "Managing Gas Accumulation in Emergency Core Cooling, Decay Heat Removal, and Containment Spray Systems" dated January 11, 2008.

LETTER NUMBER:

2.08.023

Dear Sir or Madam:

The U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued NRC Generic Letter (GL) 2008-01 (Reference 1) to request that each licensee evaluate its Emergency Core Cooling, Decay Heat Removal, and Containment Spray Systems licensing basis, design, testing, and corrective actions to ensure that gas accumulation is maintained less than the amount that challenges operability of these systems, and that appropriate action is taken when conditions adverse to quality are identified.

The NRC, in GL 2008-01, requested each licensee submit a written response in accordance with 10 CFR 50.54(f) within 9 months of the date of the GL to provide the following information:

(a) A description of the results of evaluations that were performed pursuant to the requested actions of the GL; (b) a description of all corrective actions that you determined were necessary; and (c) a statement regarding which corrective actions were completed, the schedule for completing the remaining corrective actions, and the basis for that schedule.

Additionally, the NRC requested thiat if a licensee could not meet the requested response date, the licensee "shall provide a response within 3 months of the date of the GL". In the 3-month'response, the licensee was requested to describe the alternative course of action

Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc.

Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station Letter Number: 2.08.023 Page 2 that it proposed to take, including the basis for the acceptability of the proposed alternative course of action.

On April 8, 2008, Mr. Jarrod Wermiel, Deputy Director, Division of Safety Systems, verbally granted an extension to Entergy Pilgrim of one month for the 3-month response to GL 2008-01 during a conversation with me. The new submittal date for this response is now May 8, 2008. This letter is a follow up to that conversation. The additional time will allow Entergy Pilgrim to assess accurately the scope of work required to complete the response to the GL, which in turn would permit Entergy Pilgrim to be in a better position for determining the scope of the work needed in the next scheduled refueling outage.

This letter contains no commitments.

Should you have any questions regarding this submittal, please contact me at (508) 830 -8403.

Sincerely, Joseph R. Lynch Manager, Licensing JRL/dal cc:
