Docket Nos. 50-259 50-327 Tennessee Valley Authority

)

50-296 50-390 50-328 50-391 50-260 BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR PLANT (BFN) UNITS 1, 2 AND 3, SEQUOYAH NUCLEAR PLANT (SQN) UNITS 1 AND 2, AND WATTS BAR NUCLEAR PLANT (WBN) UNITS 1 AND 2 - ONE MONTH EXTENSION REQUEST TO REPLY TO GENERIC LETTER (GL) 2008-01: MANAGING GAS ACCUMULATION IN EMERGENCY CORE COOLING, DECAY HEAT REMOVAL, AND CONTAINMENT SPRAY SYSTEMS The purpose of this letter is to request a one month extension to the subject generic letter with respect to the alternative GL 2008-01 "3 month response" milestone.

NRC provided the "3 month response" option in GL 2008-01 by stating that if licensees cannot meet the requested "9 month response" date (due October 11, 2008), they shall provide a response within 3 months that describes the alternative course of action, including the basis for acceptability.

TVA believes a one month extension to the alternative 3 month response is necessary in order to further evaluate the scope and/or need for piping walkdowns to support gas void evaluations. If walkdowns inside containment are necessary to establish a design basis relative to gas voids, then TVA may need to schedule some walkdowns during the first refueling outage after fall of 2008 for some of our operating units. These walkdowns would exceed the "9 month response" milestone; however, TVA has not made a final decision to go beyond the October 11, 2008 completion date.

This letter and extension were discussed among TVA and NRC's Staff members (Brendan Moroney and Jerry Wermiel) by telephone on April 7, 2008.
