SUMMARY

OF JANUARY 24, 2008, MEETING TO DISCUSS OCTOBER 16, 2007, LICENSE AMENDMENT REQUEST (LAR) THAT PROPOSES MODIFICATONS TO MITIGATE WATER HAMMERS (TAC NOS. MD7000, MD7001, AND MD7002)

On January 24, 2008, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff met with Duke (the licensee) to discuss the October 16, 2008, LAR that proposes modifications to mitigate water hammer. The October 16, 2008, LAR is available in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) under accession number ML072920449. The handouts provided by the licensee during the meeting are available under ADAMS accession number ML080250274. Enclosed is a list of the attendees.

The licensee discussed its proposed modification that will install check valves in the low-pressure service water (LPSW) supply header and automatic pneumatic discharge isolation valves, controllable vacuum breaker valves, and associated circuitry in the LPSW return header to isolate engineered safeguards portions of the LPSW system. The modification is intended to eliminate water hammers. The licensee also discussed proposed changes to the Technical Specifications associated with the modification.

The licensee stated that it intends to implement the modification on Unit 2 during the fall 2008 refueling outage, and requested that the amendments be issued by October 2008. The NRC staff stated that it could support that schedule.
