WATERFORD STEAM ELECTRIC STATION, UNIT 3 - WITHDRAWAL OF W3-ISI-002, REQUEST FOR ALTERNATIVE (TAC NO. MD4855)
Dear Mr. Walsh:
By letter dated March 8, 2007, Entergy Operations, Inc. (Entergy) submitted Request for Alternative W3-ISI-002 (Agencywide Documents and Access Management System (ADAMS)
Accession No. ML070740518), requesting approval to extend the second inservice inspection (ISI) interval for piping at Waterford Steam Electric Station, Unit 3 (Waterford 3) to the end of its sixteenth refueling outage, currently scheduled for the fall 2009. The requested extension was approximately 17 months beyond the 1-year extension allowed by American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (Code)Section XI, paragraph IWB-2412(b).
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff informed Entergy that this extension was beyond that specified in Information Notice 98-44 and, therefore, the staff would not be able to grant the request.
Subsequently, by its letter dated August 7, 2007 (ADAMS Accession No. ML072220121),
Entergy proposed Request for Alternative W3-ISI-004, an alternative to the inspection requirements of ASME Code,Section XI, paragraphs IWA-2430(a) and IWB-2500(a) for seven dissimilar metal welds found in the Reactor Coolant System cold-leg piping at Waterford 3. In this letter, by submitting W3-ISI-004 for such welds, Entergy also stated that it is withdrawing the previously submitted W3-ISI-002.
Accordingly, the NRC staff has ceased all its activities on W3-ISI-002.
