July 18, 2007 Mr. G. R. Peterson Vice President McGuire Nuclear Station Duke Power Company LLC 12700 Hagers Ferry Road Huntersville, NC 28078

SUBJECT:

MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION, UNIT 1 - CLOSURE OF CONFIRMATORY ACTION LETTER NRR-07-019 (TAC NO. MD4159)

Dear Mr. Peterson:

On March 22, 2007, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Confirmatory Action Letter (CAL) No. NRR-07-019 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession Number ML070780206) regarding dissimilar metal welds in the pressurizer at McGuire Nuclear Station, Unit 1. This letter acknowledges receipt of your letter dated May 29, 2007 (ADAMS Accession No. ML071560493) informing the NRC of actions taken in response to this CAL.

In your letter, you stated Duke Power Company LLC (Duke) has applied full structural weld overlays (WOLs) on dissimilar metal welds (DMWs) of four 6" pressurizer safety/relief nozzles, one 4" pressurizer spray line nozzle, and one 14" pressurizer surge line nozzle at the McGuire Nuclear Station, Unit 1. The purpose of these overlays is to eliminate dependence on the primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) susceptible Alloy 82/182 welds as pressure boundary welds and to mitigate any potential future PWSCC in these welds. The overlays were installed using a PWSCC resistant weld filler material, Alloy 52M. Duke submitted the ultrasonic testing results to the NRC by letter dated April 19, 2007 (ADAMS Accession No. ML071210249).

Based on your letter, the NRC has found that all the commitments listed in the CAL and supporting commitment letter dated February 27, 2007 (ADAMS Accesion No. ML070680293) have been met. No further response is required regarding the CAL. We consider the CAL closed.

Thank you for informing us of the actions documented in your letter. These actions may be examined during a future NRC inspection of your facility.

Current NRC regulations and the NRC Enforcement Policy are available at the NRC web site at http://www.nrc.gov/materials/miau/mat-toolkits.html and http://www.nrc.gov/what-wedo/

Peterson In accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 2, Section 2.390 of the NRC's "Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter will be made available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public Document Room or from the NRCs document system, ADAMS, accessible from the NRC Web site at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html.
