REQUESTS FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WOLF CREEK GENERATING STATION, UNIT 1 LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION JUNE 14, 2007 The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation held a telephone conference call on June 14, 2007, as a followup discussion and request for clarification to the applicants response to the following request for additional information (RAI) concerning the Wolf Creek Generating Station (WCGS),

Unit 1, license renewal application (LRA). The applicants response to this RAI was submitted by letter dated May 2, 2007.

RAI 2.3.3.14-5 Updated Safety Analysis Report (USAR) Table 9.5.1-2 lists various types of fire water suppression systems. The staff requests that the applicant verify whether the fire water suppression systems in the areas listed below are within the scope of license renewal in accordance with the Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR 54.4(a)) and subject to an aging management review in accordance with 10 CFR 54.21(a)(1). If not, the staff requests that the applicant provide a justification for their exclusion.

Discussion: Based on the discussion with the applicant, the staff indicated that the response to this RAI requires clarification. The applicants response lists fire water suppression systems that are not within the scope of license renewal. The staff finds this inconsistent with the WCGS USAR Section 9.5. The staff requested that the applicant justify why these components were not included within the scope of license renewal pursuant to 10 CFR 54.4(a)(3) as some of them are required for compliance with 10 CFR 50.48, and 10 CFR Part 50, Appendix A, Criterion 3 (GDC 3). The applicant will provide its formal response in writing.
