August 2, 2005 LICENSEE:
Exelon Generation Company, LLC FACILITY:
Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station, Units 1 and 2
SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF JUNE 30, 2005, MEETING WITH EXELON GENERATION COMPANY, LLC, REGARDING ACOUSTIC CIRCUIT MODEL (ACM)
ANALYSIS AND STEAM DRYER LOAD DEFINITION On June 30, 2005, a Category 1 public meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and representatives of Exelon Generation Company, LLC (the licensee) at NRC headquarters in Rockville, Maryland. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the use of the acoustic circuit model (ACM) to predict pressure forces on the steam dryers at Quad Cities, Units 1 and 2 (QC-1 and QC-2).
A listing of the participants is available through the Agencywide Document Access and Management System (ADAMS) at accession number ML051960016.
The licensee presented information regarding; (1) its plans and basis for operation of QC-1 at extended power uprate (EPU) levels, (2) assessment of the ACM in determining steam dryer loading for QC-2, (3) an assessment of the capability of the ACM to predict loads at 85 percent power (pre-EPU licensed power level), (4) an assessment of the capability of the ACM to predict loads at 100 percent power, and (5) the ability of the steam line strain gauges installed on QC-1 to provide accurate data for use as input to the ACM in predicting steam dryer acoustic loads. Discussions regarding the content of the QC-2 60 day report were, by agreement of both parties, deferred until a later date.
A copy of the licensee's presentation is available in ADAMS at ML051860247.
The NRC staff concluded that the meeting was beneficial in providing it with a better understanding of how the licensee was using the model to represent the performance of both Units 1 and 2. However, the staff indicated that it continues to have questions regarding the validation of the ACM used to calculate steam dryer loads. For example, the staff noted questions remain regarding how the model was being adjusted to compensate for the Unit 1 failed strain gauges, model defects, uncertainty ranges, and damping factors.
At the end of the discussions between the NRC and the licensee, there were several comments from a member of the public (ML051920156). The comments were taken under consideration by both the NRC staff and the licensee.
