Rich and Alicia, Neither Sue nor Amanda (nor Mike Sackschewsky) are in their respective offices this afternoon, so I don't have an answer yet on the B.A.

My understanding from rereading Sue's email is that the additional information she received is summarized at the bottom of her July 8 email and reads as follows.

During the NRC's site visit to the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant (BSEP) on January 25, 2005, Tom Thompson (Progress Energy, Environmental Services) and Susan Sargeant (PNNL) discussed issues regarding aquatic resources surrounding the BSEP site and how the BSEP affected these resources. Some of the topics that were discussed do not appear in the Applicant's Environmental Report, but were included draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement. These topics include the design and operation of the BSEP cooling water intake system and Progress Energy plans for 316(b) compliance under EPA's new rule on cooling water intake systems, the limited number of previous sightings of West Indian manatees (Trichechus manatus) in the Cape Fear Estuary, and the recent introduction of an invasive red algae species from Asia, Gracilaria tenuistipitata, and how this algae has

> affected plant operations. Regarding BSEP plans for compliance with 316(b) of the Clean Water Act, Tom Thompson indicated in an e-mail to Susan Sargeant on January 26, 2005 that "The Proposal for Information Collection for 316(b) compliance will be submitted to the state as soon as we have completed it. The final due date for results from our studies is January 2008." Regarding the West Indian manatee, Tom Thompson indicated during conversations on January 25, 2005, that there he was aware of only two documented sightings of the manatee in the Cape Fear Estuary. He was not aware of any occurrences of the manatee at, or in the close vicinity of, the BSEP.

Regarding the non-native invasive algae species Gracilaria tenuistipitata, Tom Thompson related during conversations on January 25, 2005 that the algae caused several water blockage problems at the diversion structure at the entrance to the intake canal in 2001. To alleviate the problem, the diversion structure screens are now on a 7-day per week cleaning and maintenance schedule.

Prepared by Susan Sargeant (PNNL) on June 17, 2005.

I will confirm with Sue, but I believe this fully covers the information she received for documentation.
