SUMMARY
OF TELEPHONE CALL CONDUCTED ON APRIL 8, 2005, WITH CONNECTICUT TUMOR REGISTRY IN SUPPORT OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW OF THE LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION FOR MILLSTONE POWER STATION UNITS 2 AND 3 (TAC NOS. MC1827 AND MC1828)
On April 8, 2005, I had a telephone discussion with Dr. Anthony Polednak of the Connecticut Tumor Registry, a part of the Connecticut Department of Public Health. The purpose of the telephone discussion was to understand the views of the Connecticut Tumor Registry regarding any possible link between radiation exposure and cancer incidence in the environs of Millstone Power Station, Units 2 and 3 (Millstone). Dr. Polednak began by informing me about the various reports available on the public Web site for the Connecticut Tumor Registry and plans for future reports. He indicated that, in general, the cancer incidence rates in New London County are higher than the other Connecticut counties. However, the higher incidence is not related to radiation exposure from Millstone. I asked him about the claims by Ms. Gail Merrill about high rates of breast cancer in New London County due to radiation exposure from Millstone. Again, he stated that there is no sign of increased cancer in New London County or any other Connecticut county due to radiation exposure from Millstone. Dr. Polednak also stated that there are a number of factors that effect breast cancer incidence. For example, women in the northeastern states experience a higher incidence of breast cancer in general, partly because they tend to have a higher level of affluence than women in other parts of the nation. Women who have a higher level of affluence tend to have fewer and later pregnancies than other women. Women who have fewer and later pregnancies tend to have higher breast cancer incidence.
