SUBJECT:
PEACH BOTTOM ATOMIC POWER STATION - ANNUAL ASSESSMENT OF SAFETY PERFORMANCE
Dear Senator Santorum:
I would like to personally invite you and other members of your organization to attend a meeting between the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Exelon Generation Company in which the NRC staff will discuss with Exelon our annual assessment of the safety performance of the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station.
The meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at the Peach Bottom Inn, 6085 Delta Road in Delta, Pennsylvania. At the meeting we will briefly discuss our Reactor Oversight Process and then discuss with Exelon our assessment of their safety performance at Peach Bottom and their response to our assessment. The meeting is open to the public for observation. Following the presentation, the NRC staff will be available to answer questions from you and members of the public regarding the safety performance of Peach Bottom and the role of the NRC in ensuring safe plant operations.
The NRC recently completed its annual assessment of the safety performance of the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station in accordance with the NRC Reactor Oversight Process. Our assessment used the most recent performance indicator data and inspection findings from January 1, 2004 through December 31, 2004. We described our assessment results in a letter to the Exelon Generation Company on March 2, 2005. A copy of that letter is enclosed. The NRCs meeting notice with meeting agenda, can be found in ADAMS with Accession Number ML050680522 and the assessment letter with Accession Number: ML050610708.
ADAMS is accessible from the NRC Web Site at: http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html.
You can also become familiar with our Reactor Oversight Process, the information we used in our annual assessment, and the specific safety performance at the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station through the NRC Web site. This information may be accessed at: http://www.nrc.gov/NRR/OVERSIGHT/ASSESS/index.html.
Your schedule permitting, I look forward to meeting you on March 29, 2005. In the interim, please do not hesitate to contact me at 610-337-5209, if I can be of further assistance to you.
