NORTH ANNA POWER STATION UNIT 1 RESULTS OF INSPECTION OF ALLOY 82/182/600 MATERIALS USED IN PRESSURIZER PENETRATIONS AND STEAM SPACE PIPING CONNECTIONS PERFORMED FOR NRC BULLETIN 2004-01 In a letter dated May 28, 2004 the NRC issued NRC Bulletin 2004-01, Inspection of Alloy 82/182/600 Materials Used in the Fabrication of Pressurizer Penetrations and Steam Space Piping Connections at Pressurized-Water Reactors (PWRs). The bulletin requested inspection of the Alloy 82/182/600 materials used in the pressurizer penetrations and steam space piping connections. It also requested a 60-day report regarding the inspections performed, including the as-found condition of the pressurizer shell and associated penetrations During the Fall 2004 refueling outage for North Anna Unit 1, Dominion performed 100%
bare metal visual examination of the five welds connecting the pressurizer spray valve, the safety valves, and the power operated relief valve nozzles to the downstream piping.
In addition, best-effort ultrasonic examinations were performed to the extent possible given certain geometric limitations. The aggregate coverage was about 40-60%. However, coverage from scans that would have detected axial flaws in the weld was essentially 100%. No flaws were identified.
Note that these examinations were not the Code required examinations. The Code examinations are not scheduled until later in the third Interval.
No indications of leakage or cracking were found.
Should you have any questions regarding Dominions response to the bulletin, please contact Mr. Thomas Shaub at (804) 273-2763.
Very truly yours, Y
