October 20, 2004 Mr. Dennis L. Koehl Site Vice President Point Beach Nuclear Plant Nuclear Management Company, LLC 6610 Nuclear Road Two Rivers, WI 54241
SUBJECT:
REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (RAI) REGARDING SEVERE ACCIDENT MITIGATION ALTERNATIVES FOR POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 (TAC NOS. MC2049 AND MC2050)
Dear Mr. Koehl:
The staff has reviewed the analysis of severe accident mitigation alternatives (SAMAs) submitted by Nuclear Management Company, LLC (NMC) in support of its application for license renewal for Point Beach Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2, and identified areas where additional information was needed to complete its review. By letter dated July 2, 2004, these RAIs were transmitted to NMC and a response was requested within 60 days of the date of the letter. The letter transmitting the RAIs was followed by a phone call asking if NMC needed clarification on any of these RAIs. NMC requested a brief discussion about one RAI. NMC responded to these RAIs by letter dated August 31, 2004.
The staff noted that NMC did not respond to the full scope of several RAIs. An e-mail requesting clarification on several RAIs was sent to NMC on September 16, 2004. The staff requested clarification to NMCs RAI responses during a conference call on October 7, 2004, and by e-mail dated October 12, 2004 (enclosed). NMC agreed to respond to the clarification requests, but may not be able to transmit the responses for 3 weeks, or around the first week in November. This could impact the license renewal schedule. Please contact me after submittal of the RAI clarifications to discuss any schedule impacts.
D. Koehl If you have any questions, please contact me at 301-415-2462 or e-mail sxf@nrc.gov.
Sincerely,
/RA/
