OF A TELEPHONE CONFERENCE HELD ON JULY 26, 2004, BETWEEN THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION AND THE SOUTHERN NUCLEAR OPERATING COMPANY CONCERNING THE REVIEW FOR THE JOSEPH M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2, LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION (TAC NOS. MC0774 AND MC0775)

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff and representatives of Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC or the applicant) held a telephone conference on July 26, 2004, to discuss applicants response to a request for additional information (RAI) pertaining to the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant (FNP) license renewal application.

The conference call was useful in clarifying the intent of the staffs question. On the basis of the discussion, the applicant was able to better understand the staff's question. No staff decisions were made during the telephone conference, and the applicant agreed to provide information for clarification. provides a list of the telephone conference participants. Enclosure 2 contains a listing of the question discussed with the applicant, including a brief description on the status of the item. The applicant has had an opportunity comment on this summary.

This question pertains to LRA Section B.5.9 Periodic Surveillance and Preventive Maintenance Activities, which was supplemented by the applicant via letter dated June 18, 2004. Section B.5.9 is a new aging management program that was not in the original LRA. The staffs question and the associated discussion are presented below:

Follow-up to RAI B.5.9-1, Part c The staff requests the applicant to include a specific frequency for the periodic inspections.

RAI B.5.9-1c states that a frequency will be determined when the program is developed.

Discussion: The applicant indicated that it understood the question, and agreed to provide a supplemental response to this question.
