Dear Mr. Pompper:

I would like to personally invite you and other members of your organization to attend the meeting between the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSEG) in which the NRC staff will discuss our annual assessment of the safety performance of the Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations, as well as the work environment at the facility.

The meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at the Bridgeport Holiday Inn, One Pureland Drive (Interstate 295 at Exit 10), Swedesboro, NJ. We will briefly discuss our Reactor Oversight Process, and then discuss with PSEG: (1) our assessment of their safety performance at the Salem and Hope Creek Generating Stations and their response to our assessment; (2) the results of recent PSEG assessments of the work environment at the stations; and (3) PSEGs action plan to address its assessment findings and to improve the work environment. The meeting is open to the public for observation. Following the presentation, the NRC staff will be available to accept comments and questions from you and members of the public regarding the safety performance of Salem and/or Hope Creek, and the role of the NRC in ensuring safe plant operations. Enclosed is the meeting notice for your reference.

The NRC recently completed its annual assessment of the safety performance of these sites in accordance with the NRC Reactor Oversight Process. Our assessment used the most recent performance indicator data and 2003 inspection findings. We described our assessment results in letters to PSEG on March 3, 2004. We will briefly discuss our Reactor Oversight Process, and then discuss with PSEG: (1) our assessment of their safety performance at the Salem and Hope Creek Generating Stations and their response to our assessment; (2) the results of recent PSEG assessments of the work environment at the stations; and (3) PSEGs action plan to address its assessment findings and to improve the work environment. The meeting is open to the public for observation. Following the presentation, the NRC staff will be available to accept comments and questions from you and members of the public regarding the safety performance of Salem and/or Hope Creek, and the role of the NRC in ensuring safe plant operations. Enclosed is the meeting notice for your reference.

The NRC recently completed its annual assessment of the safety performance of these sites in accordance with the NRC Reactor Oversight Process. Our assessment used the most recent performance indicator data and 2003 inspection findings. We described our assessment results in letters to PSEG on March 3, 2004.
