SUMMARY
OF MARCH 31, 2004, ANNUAL ASSESSMENT MEETING FOR THE VERMONT YANKEE NUCLEAR POWER STATION On March 31, 2004, at 7:00 p.m., the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) conducted an Annual Assessment Meeting with Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc. at the Vernon Elementary School, Vernon, VT. The NRC requested the meeting with Entergy to discuss NRCs assessment of the safety performance of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station for calendar year 2003.
A notice of licensee meeting was issued on March 10, 2004, and was posted on the NRCs external (public) web page (ADAMS Accession No ML040701158).
The NRC presented and discussed its assessment of the safety performance of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station for the period between January 1 through December 31, 2003.
The NRC presentation included: a discussion of the reactor oversight process, performance assessment results, and an overview of calendar year 2004 planned inspections. Entergy provided a verbal response to NRCs safety performance assessment. A copy of the NRC slides presented at the meeting are attached.
Several hundred members of the public observed this meeting and were offered the opportunity to communicate with the NRC regarding Entergys performance at Vermont Yankee and the role of the agency in ensuring safe plant operations. At the end of the meeting between the NRC and Entergy, the NRC answered questions from the public. The time period for answering questions from the public was abbreviated, at the request of the public, in order commence a Category 3 meeting regarding Entergys request of the NRC to increase the power level of Vermont Yankee.
