ISSUANCE OF RENEWED FACILITY OPERATING LICENSE NOS. NPF-9 AND NPF-17 FOR MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION, UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2, AND RENEWED FACILITY OPERATING LICENSE NOS. NPF-35 AND NPF-52 FOR CATAWBA NUCLEAR STATION, UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2

Dear Mr. Tuckman:

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has issued Renewed Facility Operating License Nos. NPF-9 (Enclosure 1) and NPF-17 (Enclosure 2) for the McGuire Nuclear Station, Unit Nos. 1 and 2 (McGuire, Units 1 and 2). The NRC also has issued Renewed Facility Operating License Nos. NPF-35 (Enclosure 3) and NPF-52 (Enclosure 4) for the Catawba Nuclear Station, Unit Nos. 1 and 2 (Catawba, Units 1 and 2). These renewed facility operating licenses have been issued on the basis of our review of your application dated June 13, 2001, as supplemented by letters dated March 1, March 8, March 11, March 15, April 15, June 25 (two letters), June 26, July 9, October 2,October 28, November 5, November 14, November 18, November 21, and December 16, 2002. The Technical Specifications for McGuire, Units 1 and 2, and Catawba, Units 1 and 2, were not amended as a result of our review. contains Renewed Facility Operating License No. NPF-9 with three attachments (Appendix A, Technical Specifications, Appendix B, Additional Conditions, and Appendix C Antitrust Conditions). Enclosure 2 contains Renewed Facility Operating License No. NPF-17 with three attachments (Appendix A, Technical Specifications, Appendix B, Additional Conditions, and Appendix C Antitrust Conditions). Enclosure 3 contains Renewed Facility Operating License No. NPF-35 with three attachments (Appendix A Technical Specifications Appendix B, Additional Conditions, and Appendix C, Antitrust Conditions). Enclosure 4 contains Renewed Facility Operating License No. NPF-52 with three attachments (Appendix A Technical Specifications, Appendix B, Additional Conditions, and Appendix C, Antitrust Conditions).

Renewed Facility Operating License No. NPF-9 (the renewed license for McGuire, Unit 1) expires at midnight, June 12, 2041. Renewed Facility Operating License No. NPF-17 (the renewed license for McGuire, Unit 2) expires at midnight, March 3, 2043.

Renewed Facility Operating License No. NPF-35 (the renewed license for Catawba, Unit 1) expires at midnight, December 5, 2043. Renewed Facility Operating License No. NPF-52 (the renewed license for Catawba, Unit 2), expires at midnight, December 5, 2043.

The results of the environmental review related to the issuance of the renewed licenses are contained in NUREG-1437, Supplement 8, Generic Environmental Impact Statement for License Renewal of Nuclear Plants, Supplement 8, Regarding McGuire Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2," issued December 2002, and in NUREG-1437, Supplement 9, Generic Environmental Impact Statement for License Renewal of Nuclear Plants, Supplement 9, Regarding Catawba Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2," issued December 2002. is a copy of the related Federal Register notice of issuance of the renewed licenses.
