L NINE MILE POINT NUCLEAR STATION UNIT #2

SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE Nine Mile Point Unit Two operated with a capacity factor (MDC) of 71.97% and an availability factor of 73.63% for the month of December 2002.

At 1548 hours0.0179 days <br />0.43 hours <br />0.00256 weeks <br />5.89014e-4 months <br /> on December 16, 2002, Unit 2 automatically scrammed on a high reactor vessel pressure signal following a main generator runback. The runback signal was caused by high temperature in the stator water cooling system resulting from a failed cooling water controller, 2GMC-TIC1I1.

After replacing 2GMC-TIC101 the reactor was brought critical at 1018 hours0.0118 days <br />0.283 hours <br />0.00168 weeks <br />3.87349e-4 months <br /> on December 18'h. The main generator was placed in service at 0110 hours0.00127 days <br />0.0306 hours <br />1.818783e-4 weeks <br />4.1855e-5 months <br /> on December 19,", ending outage 02-03. During power ascension, a steam leak was identified on the "A" Moisture Separator Reheater (MSR). At 0006 hours6.944444e-5 days <br />0.00167 hours <br />9.920635e-6 weeks <br />2.283e-6 months <br /> on December 20t, the decision was made to remove the Unit from service to repair the steam'leak on the "A" MSR. The main turbine was removed from service at 0337 hours0.0039 days <br />0.0936 hours <br />5.57209e-4 weeks <br />1.282285e-4 months <br /> and reactor shutdown was completed at 0520 hours0.00602 days <br />0.144 hours <br />8.597884e-4 weeks <br />1.9786e-4 months <br /> the same day.' Following successful completion of repairs, the reactor was brought critical on December 25, 2002 at 0529 hours0.00612 days <br />0.147 hours <br />8.746693e-4 weeks <br />2.012845e-4 months <br /> and the main generator was placed in service at 2227 hours0.0258 days <br />0.619 hours <br />0.00368 weeks <br />8.473735e-4 months <br /> the same day ending outage 02-04. Full power operation was achieved at 1607 hours0.0186 days <br />0.446 hours <br />0.00266 weeks <br />6.114635e-4 months <br /> on December 27, 2002.

On December 27, 2002, at 1901 hours0.022 days <br />0.528 hours <br />0.00314 weeks <br />7.233305e-4 months <br />, reactor power was lowered to 75% to perform a control rod pattern adjustment. Full power operation was resumed at 1243 hours0.0144 days <br />0.345 hours <br />0.00206 weeks <br />4.729615e-4 months <br /> on December 28, 2002.

On December 29, 2002, at 2156 hours0.025 days <br />0.599 hours <br />0.00356 weeks <br />8.20358e-4 months <br />, reactor power was lowered to 90% for a control rod pattern adjustment. Reactor power was returned to rated conditions at 0309 hours0.00358 days <br />0.0858 hours <br />5.109127e-4 weeks <br />1.175745e-4 months <br /> on December 30, 2002.

There were no challenges to the safety relief valves during this reporting period.
