SUMMARY
OF MEETING HELD ON OCTOBER 2, 2002, REGARDING TRANSITION TO NEW FUEL On October 2, 2002, representatives of Energy Northwest met with the NRC staff to initiate communications regarding the transition process from Westinghouse SVEA-96 fuel to Framatome ANP ATRIUMTM-10 fuel. Representatives of Framatome ANP also attended the meeting.
Energy Northwest gave an overview of the transition approach, analyses and methodology.
The staff emphasized that Energy Northwest should verify General Electrics analysis of the reactor and related systems that were performed when the core was originally designed. The staff then emphasized that the evaluation of the analysis needed to focus on how a power uprate, changes in fuel types, and a longer fuel cycle would impact the original analyses. The meeting continued with a discussion of the computer programs and modeling to be used.
Finally, Energy Northwest discussed the fuel corrosion assessment of Cycle 15 fuel.
The staff was impressed with Energy Northwests foresight, planning and openness. Energy Northwest thanked the staff for their recommendations and the opportunity to discuss the issues surrounding fuel transition. At the conclusion of the meeting, the staff expressed their appreciation to Energy Northwest for an insightful meeting. An attendance list is provided.
The slides used during the meeting are available in ADAMS under Accession Number ML022760404.
