Dear Mr. Tuckman:
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has completed the draft plant-specific Supplement 8 to NUREG-1 437, "Generic Environmental Impact Statement for License Renewal of Nuclear Plants," regarding the renewal of operating licenses NPF-9 and NPF-17 for McGuire Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2, for an additional 20 years of operation. Enclosed is a copy of the report for your review and comment.
The draft report will be filed with the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and a notice of availability will be subsequently published by the EPA in the FederalRegister. Any comments on the draft plant-specific Supplement 8 to the GElS should be addressed to:

Enclosed is a copy of the FederalRegister Notice of Availability for the draft plant-specific Supplement 8 to the Generic Environmental Impact Statement (GElS), NUREG-1437, regarding the renewal of operating licenses NPF-9 and NPF-17 for an additional 20 years of operation at McGuire Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2. The notice advises the public that the draft report is available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public Document Room or from the Publicly Available Records (PARS) component of NRC's document system (ADAMS).
ADAMS is accessible from the NRC Web site at http:l/www.nrc.gov/reading-rm.html (the Public Electronic Reading Room). In addition, the J. Murrey Atkins Library at the University of North Carolina - Charlotte, has agreed to make the draft supplement available for public inspection.
The notice also provides information about the public meeting on the draft supplement to the GElS to be held on June 12, 2002, in the auditorium at the Central Piedmont Community College, at 11920 Verhoeff Road, Huntersville, North Carolina. The staff will be conducting two meetings on June 12, to commence at 1:30 pm and 7:00 pm. Duke Energy Corporation is invited to participate in both sessions of the meeting. The NRC staff will host informal discussions on the supplemental environmental impact statement review one hour prior to the start of each session at the same location. Units I and 2 (McGuire). McGuire is located in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Possible alternatives to the proposed action (license renewal) include no action and reasonable alternative energy sources.
The draft supplement to the GElS is available electronically for public Inspection In the NRC Public Document Room located at One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike (first floor), Rockville, Maryland, or from the Publicly Available Records (PARS) component of NRC's document system (ADAMS). ADAMS is accessible from the NRC Web site at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm.html (the Public Electronic Reading Room).
