Dear Mr. Lake:

I would like to personally invite you and other members of your organization to attend a meeting between the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and PSEG Nuclear LLC in which the NRC staff will discuss with PSEG our annual assessment of the safety performance of the Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations.

The meeting will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2002, in the auditorium of the PSEG Nuclear Training Center on Chestnut Street in Salem, New Jersey. The meeting is open to the public for observation. At the meeting we will briefly discuss our Reactor Oversight Process and then discuss our assessment of the safety performance of Salem and Hope Creek. Also, PSEG Nuclear will discuss pertinent aspects of their performance and future improvement plans. The NRC staff will be available following the meeting to answer questions from you and members of the public regarding the safety performance of Salem and Hope Creek, and the role of the NRC in ensuring safe plant operations.

The NRC recently completed its annual assessment of the safety performance of the Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Power Stations in accordance with the NRC Reactor Oversight Process. Our assessment used the most recent performance indicator data and inspection findings from April 1, 2001 through December 31, 2001. We described our assessment results in a letter to PSEG Nuclear LLC on March 1, 2002; a copy of that letter is attached.
