Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

Re:

ST. LUClE UNIT 2 DOCKET No. 50-389 FAN BELT PROBLEM DURING INITIAL

_STARTUP OF DIESEL GENERATOR Ref: Florida Power and Light letter L-82-103, dated March 17, 1982 from Uhrig to O'Reilly On February 10, 1982, Florida Power and Light identified, via telecon, a potential 10 CFR 50.55(e) condition existing at the site involving the diesel generators (2A and 2B) fan belts. During initial startup and testing excessive vibration of the diesel generators (2A and 2B) fan belts was observed at speeds in excess of 700 rpm.

In the above referenced letter, Florida Power and Light indicated that the diesel generator vendor, Power Systems, had been contacted and is working very closely with Florida Power and Light Company to resolve this problem.

Currently, at Power Systems request, an outside consultant from Flight Dynamics has been called in to investigate the problem further. Based on this, it is not possible to issue our final report on June 4 as in-dicated in the above reference. We expect to be able to complete our evaluation and submit a response for this potential 10 CFR 50.55(e) concern by August 20, 1982.

Very truly yours, Robert E. Uhrig Vice President Advanced Systems and Technology i
