Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

N 50-389 FAN i.:ELT PROBLEM DURING INITIAL STARTUP 0F DIESEL GENERATOR t
-t o On February.1.0,1982, FPLidentified,viatelecon,apotential10CFR5055(e)!
condition existing at the site involving the diesel generator 2A fan belts.
During initial startup and testing, it was observed that the fan belts'bY they diesel generator 2A unit would jump and flap violently at speeds abovd *700 rpm.
~
At present nearly all adjustments were utilized to make the unit run. 7hus no margin is available for future adjustment for expected belt stretch.
Iii addition, it was noted that fans on diesel generator 2B have a different bearing, but these belts worked satisfactorily.
The diesel generator vendor Power Systems has been contacted. An evaluation is currently being performed to determine the cause and corrective action for the concern. We expect to complete our evaluation and submit a response for this potential 10CFR 50.55(e) concern by June 4, 1982.
Very truly yours, 2
