Sonic Surveys is a wireline services company specializing in underground storage cavern logging and analysis. The company was authorized by a State of Texas license to store sealed sources and neutron generators at its facility in Mont Belvieu, and to use them at temporary job sites in State jurisdiction. The company performed work at temporary job sites in NRC jurisdiction under the terms of a reciprocity request filed in May 2022 for the remainder of the calendar year. The scope of this inspection was limited to an evaluation of licensed activities (logging a 150,000 barrel liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) underground storage cavern using a 150-mCi sealed source of Co-60) at a Marathon Petroleum storage terminal in Woodhaven, Michigan.

The inspector accompanied the licensee's field personnel to the job site in Woodhaven to observe all phases of logging on Woodhaven LPG #1 . The inspector observed the handling and use of the source, logging activities, and area surveys and source transport preparations upon conclusion of the work. The crew (consisting of a logging supervisor and his assistant) were knowledgeable of radiation protection procedures and licensee procedures, used a calibrated and operable survey instrument as required, wore appropriate dosimetry, and used adequate handling tools and other ALARA practices. The source transport container was adequately secured and labeled. Independent surveys in the vicinity of this container with the source present were well within DOT limits and NRC limits to members of the public. Independent surveys in the vicinity of the wellhead following conclusion of the work found no evidence of residual contamination or elevated exposure levels.

The inspector reviewed a selection of records available at the job site including shipping papers, vehicle survey records, operating and emergency procedures, and a copy of the State of Texas licens No violations of NRC requirements were identified as a result of this inspection. The inspector held an exit meeting with the licensee by telephone on May 23, 2022.
