Ecology In Bert Grey, Nevada State Health Division Background As part of the low level waste inspection conducted during March 30, 1981 to April 3, 1981 at Beatty, Nevada, TSMT Trailer No. 440182 and associated shipping papers were inspected on March 31, 198 Details of that inspection are given in this repor Radiation surveys were performed with the following instruments: (1) Eberline E-520, serial number 1943 due for recalibration on April 7, 198 (2) Xetex 3058, serial number 8166 due for recalibration on April 30, 198 Checks for removable contamination were performed with an Eberline E-520 in conjunction with an HP-260 pancake prob Inspection Licensee-Shipper: Shipment Inspected: Carrier: Trailer No: Freight Bill: PSE&G (05000272 & 05000311) Salem, New Jersey March 31, 1981 TSMT 440182 372788 This trailer transported 114 fifty-five gallon drums of LSA wastes, a description of which is provided as Attachment. Radiation surveys of the trailer indicated a maximum dose rate of 5.7 mr/hr at the surface of the trailer and l. l mr/hr at two meters from the sides of the trailer. The dose rate in the cab was measured to be 1.1 mr/h. 49 CFR 173.393 n(3) requires that each closure device of packaging, including any required gasket be prooerly installed and free of defect Contrary to the above requirement the bolt to drum number 1926 was not in the lockring and was laying on the floor of the truc Photographic documentation is provided as Attachment 8.

  • CFR 177.842(d) specifies that packages must be so blocked and braced that they cannot change positions during conditions normally incident to transportatio Contrary to the above requirement, the inspector observed that drum number 1900 had moved up against the door of the trailer such that on opening it came out of th.e trailer and hung suspended by a metal ban Photographic documentation is provided as Attachment.

Checks of the drums for removable contamination and a survey of the truck bed after unloading showed no significant radioactive contamination above background.
