Dear Sir of Madam:

By letter (Reference 1), the NRC issued guidance related to appropriate quality controls for an optical disk document imaging system. The Generic Letter (GL) specified in part that "one optical disk is stored in the document imaging system for on-line retrieval."

By letter (Reference 2), Entergy notified the NRC that optical disk storage has been implemented at Arkansas Nuclear One, Units 1 and 2; Grand Gulf Nuclear Station, Unit 1; River Bend Station, Unit 1; and Waterford Steam Electric Station, Unit 3. Entergy included in its notification that the above specification was met as follows: "The primary disk remains In the optical storage library Uukebox). The default image, supplied upon request for viewing, is retrieved from the magnetic disk."

The above response is being modified. To ensure the images are secure and retrievable, copies are maintained on two optical disks, the primary and secondary disks.

Due to the number of images committed to the document management system at the sites, the numbers of primary platters that have been filled have exceeded the capacity of the optical jukebox. The practice is that the primary platters will be in the jukebox A-')D1

CNRO-2003-00037 Page 2 unless it is filled. When the jukebox is full, a portion of the primary platters will be removed. In general this results in removal of primary platters containing older information. The primary and secondary disks are stored in a record storage facility per Entergy's Quality Assurance Program Manual. Since the default image, supplied upon request for viewing, is retrieved from the magnetic disk, the primary disk is only another backup and therefore is not required to be physically in the jukebox.

I declare under penalty of perjury that the foregoing is true and correct. Executed on August 29, 2003.

Sincerely, M. A. Krupa Director, Nuclear Safety Assurance MAKIDM/bal cc: (See Next Page)
