Cycle 2 Iod ha Activity (File:

2-1510) 7

Gentlemen:

As requested in NRC's SER accompanying Amendment 24 of the ANO-2 operating license, we are providing you with our observations to date on the Cycle 2 primary system iodine - 131 activity and inferences relating to perforated fuel rods in the core.

As a point of reference, during Cycle 1 at ANO-2, the equilibrium activity of iodine - 131 in the reactor coolant system (RCS) was typically about 0.12 pci/cc during long periods of essentially full power operation.

At the end-of-cycle 1, the entire core was sipped, and all fuel rods found to be perforated were removed from those assemblies scheduled for additional service in Cycle 2.

Cycle 2 criticality was achieved on June 29, 1981.

Equilibrium activity of iodine - 131 in the RCS was not achieved until into September 1981 due to fluctuating power and plant conditions existing prior to that time.

Since September, however, the activity of iodine - 131 in the RCS has been stable at about 0.06 pci/cc for long periods of essentially full power operation.

Based on a comparison of the Cycle 2 and Cycle 1 iodine

- 131 activities, we infer the number of perforated fuel rods present in the core at this time in Cycle 2 is aoout one-half the number of perforated rods present in the core at the end-of-cycle 1.

In comparison to the limiting condition for operation, iodine dose equivalent activity is approximately 0.12 pci/cc for Cycle 2 (as compared to a Technical Specification limit of 1.0 pei/cc) and the observed A

f activity level has remained stable.

i As this small RCS lodine level.is well within limits established in the Technical Specifications and assumed in the Safety Analyses, continued j

operation at these iodine levels does not impact negatively on public health and safety.

i We will continue.to closely monitor the iodine activity level in the RCS as operation proceeds.

Very truly yours, bG4nd 0 f I
