SUBJECT:
PLANT SHUTDOWN REQUIRED BY TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS San Onofre Unit 2 initiated a shutdown at 6:00 p.m. PST on January 11, 1989 as required by Technical Specifications due to an inoperable motor-driven auxiliary feedwater pump. The pump motor tripped on neutral overcurrent after only 12 seconds of operation during a surveillance test on January 9, 1989, placing the unit in a 72-hour action statement. Subsequent investigation by the licensee has concluded that the failure involves a fault in the pump motor.
The licensee has determined that a replacement motor is not available, and is sending the motor to an offsite facility for repair, possibly including rewinding. An outage of at least one week is anticipated. The unit is presently at 80% power performing a heat treatment of the circulating water system, and will then proceed with plant shutdown and cooldown.
